Improving accessibility on the web

The problem

The accessibility foundation came to us with the problem that it's hard to report accessibility problems on the web. And they would like to be able to gain a insight into the accessibility problems on the web. Both for research studies and so that they can help the companies in making their websites accessible.

Reporting issues

The first problem we wanted to tackle was the reporting of issues itself. This process should be as easy as possible, and should be easily doable with a screen reader. We came up with a browser extension that would record what the user is doing on the web page, and then when the user presses a keybind it would allow the user to report the issue and it would automatically attach the screen recording. This makes it so that their is as little input from the user needed while giving the companies a very clear understanding of where users get stuck.

Creating a design system

Because we where creating multiple products that needed to work as one, we started with designing components that we would need in the different products. The main priority being ensuring that the components where accessible for different impairments. For this we used clear focus states and a high contrast rate.

Making companies care

While working towards the solution, our research found that companies don't really care about accessibility issues. This is due to the fact that they don't think a lot of their users have an impairment. And they also don't have a clear indication of how many users it's affecting. To solve this problem we came up with a social forum, this would allow us to put quantity behind the issues. Which would make the issues actually urgent for companies. It would also allow for sharing resources which make it easier to actually make your products more accessible.
