For the past six months, I have been an intern at Yummygum. During my internship I learned a lot and had the opportunity to work on many different projects in a great team.

What have I learned

I have learned a lot over the past six months about working on a project in a team. In the process, I have especially improved my social skills. As a result, I now work better in a team to achieve a better end result together.

Furthermore, I also learned to work with React Native and React Native Web. These are frameworks that allow us to create an application for IOS, Android and web through one code base.

This means we only have to write code for all three platforms once instead of writing separate code for each platform. React Native and React Native Web greatly tested my knowledge and I learned a lot by working with them.

Because we were working under a lot of time pressure on this project, I also learned a lot about making trade-offs in whether or not we do something.

What was new

I have not worked on a real application with React Native and React Native Web before. So this was new to me and I learned a lot from this.

Because of this, I now have a better understanding of working with React Native and the challenges of creating a cross platform* (An application made for multiple platforms such as IOS, android and web) application.

Another thing that was new for me this internship was really using pull requests* (a request to add some code to the application's code). In this internship I learned the value of having other people check your code, since others look at it with fresh eyes, they see things faster that you overlook yourself.

This same principle also applies to design: by having other people look at it, you end up with a better end result.

What did I found out about my own capabilities

This internship I found out that by continuing to challenge myself, I can achieve better results. I also learned that by working under high time pressure, I can also make well thought-out choices quickly.

I further also learned that by taking myself out of my comfort zone I can quickly learn new frameworks and methods.

Does this work fit me

This internship proved once again for me that this work suits me. And that I have a passion for user experience, coding and delivering a product with an eye for detail.

Because of my great passion for coding, design and delivering the best experience for the end user. I am always expanding my knowledge of the field.

Learning to work with new frameworks this internship has made me even more confident in my knowledge and place in this industry

Have I achieved the work processes and personal learning objectives from my PAP

During my internship at Yummygum, I achieved almost all work processes and personal learning goals. With the exception of my learning objective: "To expand my knowledge on the level of typography and color." This learning objective was not directly reflected in my internship, however, I believe I did achieve it indirectly.

This is because by working daily with high-quality designs, I have gained a better understanding of color and typography. I also notice this in personal projects that I do. So I did not directly achieve this learning objective in my internship but I did achieve it indirectly.

Zoey was very pleasant to work with in the team, you have a lot of knowledge and know how to use it well.

If I could give you something to work on it would be, that you do a lot now without others necessarily knowing what you do. You can grab some of the shine you deserve. You can do this e.g. by sharing things.

Or in a more thoughtful way; asking the designer how they had something in mind, making them come to you and suddenly see that their design is "working. That is one of the coolest things for a designer to see, and you will definitely get appreciation for it.

Zoey was relaxed to work with in a team.

What I personally always find very nice is when people go against something they actually know what they want to say. After all, getting into a discussion is always fun and most of all educational for both parties!

These are obviously not shots. But sometimes assuming someone else's opinion if they have already researched it and/or clearly know what they are talking about can't hurt.

Zoey knows what she is talking about technically and when she doesn't, she simply just looks it up. Zoey works in a structured, consistent manner and has an eye for detail.

Within a team you may communicate a bit more, but I think almost every developer struggles with this.

Zoey was nice to work with on the team.

If I could give you something to work on, it would be that you can work well focused in the matrix, but also try to take your time about everything around your code editor.

You can do this by getting more involved in e.g. design-only projects, looking around a bit here and there or having a chat with colleagues.

This way you stay well informed about the active projects at Yummygum, also your opinion is important for a good end result.

Everything is a team effort. Good luck!

Zoey was very pleasant to work with on the team. You always had the available knowledge and often enough came up with suggestions on existing solutions.

If I could give you something to give away, it would be that you could share more often. Now it was sometimes very quiet from your side during the day, so it wasn't quite clear if everything was going well with the tasks you were working on.

What are my plans after my study

My plans for after college are to continue studying. I plan to study computer science technology in English at Inholland Haarlem. I also plan to continue working at Yummygum. With this study I have one day off in the week. So this would give me the space to work at Yummygum.

Conclusion

I learned a lot during this internship period about working in the team and working on many different projects at the same time.

I really enjoyed my internship at Yummygum and I am very happy that I had the opportunity to be part of the Yummygum team. I am also very happy with the space I was given to grow within the team.
